🇹🇭 PHUKET Thailand – A SPLASHY Shopping Scene

As part of our Stores Around the World series, after uncovering Bali’s lush grocery retail scene, let’s travel to another iconic Tropical destination: Phuket 🏝️

Thailand offers a world-class and dynamic retail landscape, with a strong presence of local brands — mainly in food retail — complemented by famous international banners in other categories. All of this is topped with succesful formats like malls and hypermarkets, while they struggle in the Western world

Phuket adds a very interesting layer to this, as the island attracts touristsdigital nomads, and retirees, each with different needs and purchasing habits

In this guide, we are going to explore some of the main players across the key shopping destinations

Let’s discover them !

Convenience Stores

They are fully embedded Thai in daily life — 15% of the population visits daily — and Phuket is no exception

You find them absolutely everywhere, sometimes in the most surprising locations, and in some areas they are the only option within a wide radius

7-Eleven

With around 300 stores, it is now the only major convenience player in Phuket
FamilyMart used to operate across the island, but no more…

7-Eleven in Phuket plays a different role than regular convenience stores. It offers far more than quick snacks and drinks — you get:
☕️ Freshly brewed coffee & Cold drinks (try the Thai Milk Tea – it is delicious!)
🍲 Microwave meals you can heat on the spot

The shelves stretch beyond food into:
🥫 Basic groceries and pantry items
🧴 Toiletries, sunscreen & Basic medicines
💄 Makeup and beauty products
🎁 Souvenirs and small toys

In practice, 7-Eleven behaves much closer to a mini-market, offering a range that feels similar to what you find in Indonesia’s Indomaret and Alfamart

► Take a look inside

When you want more choice than 7-Eleven, and you don’t feel like traveling far, Phuket offers a second layer of stores that keeps grocery shopping easy:

Neighborhood Supermarkets

Most people come to Phuket for the beaches and the island lifestyle — not to spend time grocery shopping

Phuket itself is a large, spread-out island, With that layout, supermarkets simply cannot be installed everywhere, and convenience stores do not always offer enough choice for a full day or week

That’s why neighborhood supermarkets have become so popular across the island

They are quick, practical and complete, giving travelers exactly what they need:
🥬 Fresh Produces
🥩 Meat, seafood and chilled food
🍚 Pantry staples and cooking ingredients
🥛 Dairy and ready-to-eat meals
🧴 Toiletries and home essentials

Phuket’s neighborhood supermarket layer is built around 4 main players (all Thai):

  • Tops Daily – ~80 stores
  • Lotus’s Go Fresh – ~50 stores
  • Big C Mini – ~50 stores
  • Supercheap – ~50 stores

We haven’t visited Tops Daily and Big C Mini in Phuket yet. What we already explored is:

Lotus’s Go Fresh

As neighborhood-focused grocery concept from Lotus’s (one of Thailand’s biggest) Lotus’s Go Fresh is the perfect example of Phuket’s neighborhood supermarket style

Even if the stores are compact, they deliver a world-class retail experience — clean, well-maintained, and stocked with products of outstanding quality

► Step inside Lotus’s Go Fresh

Super Cheap

It is Phuket’s homegrown neighborhood supermarket, with a simple, functional layout and a familiar supermarket flow — just without the polish of the national chains – a great example, the meat and fish self service

  • photo of meat self Service at supercheap in Phuket Thailand store
  • Photo of Fish self Service at supercheap in Phuket Thailand store

Super Cheap is a local favorite, and it’s also a smart stop for travelers on a budget and for anyone curious to explore a true local Phuket chain

► Enjoy this unique experience

If you stay longer in Phuket and want more choice, sharper prices or broader assortments, the island also offers a next level of stores

Bigger-Format Stores

Most travelers come to Phuket for the beaches, island life and outdoor activities — not to spend hours wandering through grocery aisles

That’s why large-format stores exist, yet remain limited on the island. They serve mainly locals, long-stay visitors, or anyone curious about these

Supermarkets

Tops is the dominant full supermarket chain in Thailand, and it plays the same role in Phuket.

It offers a very impressive shopping experience, with strong fresh produce, fish and meat quality — even without service counters — and a wide assortment that makes it easy to find everything you need in one stop

Pricing is consistently competitive, and stores feel pleasant, organized and reliable, which is why — during our stay — it quickly became our preferred grocery shopping destination

Premium & Imported Selection

These formats cater to travellers looking for more specialised food choices.

Villa Market is a full supermarket with a noticeably larger imported assortment — cheeses, snacks, sauces, wine, global brands — ideal for expats, longer stays or anyone craving familiar tastes from back home

Tops Food Hall is a premium take on the Tops supermarket experience, with a bigger deli and service counters, more ready-to-eat options while carrying the same selection in shelves

Hypermarkets

Hypermarkets are the traditional all-in-one formats — where food, non-food and everyday essentials all sit under one roof.

They are perfect when you want to stock up properly, whether that means groceries, home basics, clothing or a few unexpected extras.

Big C delivers the classic hypermarket feel — wide aisles, plenty of packaged foods and a solid general-merchandise section

It’s the kind of place where you can grab groceries and leave with a fan, a rice cooker or new beachwear without thinking too much about it.

Lotus’s follows the same logic, with a similar breadth across food and non-food.

Stores feel open, practical and well organised, and they are often seen as the go-to option for a full weekly shop or a larger basket

Wholesale & Bulk Shopping

For travelers with larger needs — Phuket also offers wholesale “Costco” formats

Makro is the closest to the classic warehouse experience: bulk sizes, strong value, large fresh sections and wider categories for big baskets.

GO Wholesale is a newer premium wholesale concept under the same retail group as Tops

Health & Beauty Stores

As Phuket is first and foremost a holiday destination, we also wanted to highlight one of the most useful retailers when you are far from home — the pharmacies.

You’ll find sunscreen, cosmetics, vitamins, and a wide range of popular Asian products that many travelers love to discover

Boots, the well-known UK pharmacy that’s part of the Walgreens Boots Alliance, is easy to find across Phuket — especially in malls and tourist areas

► See inside Boots Phuket

Watsons is the other major pharmacy chain in Thailand — modern, affordable and easy to spot everywhere. With its Hong Kong roots, you often find more regional products on the shelves, including K-beauty skincare and other Asian favorites

► Explore Watsons

Shopping Malls

Something that remains hugely popular across Southeast Asia is the mall culture, and Phuket is no exception

Here, it makes even more sense: travellers do not want to spend hours driving between stores or chasing several stops around the island

Everything is regrouped in one place — shopping, dining, entertainment, groceries and daily needs — under a single roof

Phuket offers two main types of malls:

The Central “Mega Zone”

Central Floresta

The island’s most premium mall — modern, bright and beautifully designed

You’ll find:

  • International and Thai fashion Designer brands
  • Gifts, lifestyle, and specialty shops
  • Food courts and restaurants
  • A full supermarket and premium retail floors

► Walk inside Central Floresta

Central Festival

Located nearby, Festival is just as complete, with dozens of stores, electronics, sports shops and food options

Together, Festival + Floresta form the largest shopping zone on the island.

► Discover Central Festival

Smaller Malls Around the Island

Outside Phuket Town, you find a second layer of more compact malls, easier to reach from beaches and residential areas

Robinson Lifestyle is the best-known example, with a mix of groceries, cafés, fashion, sports and practical services — ideal for long stays, families and routine errands.

► Visit Robinson Lifestyle

🌴 Conclusion

Phuket might be known for beaches, island hopping, and sunsets —

yet its retail scene is surprisingly complete and wonderfully convenient

Whether you’re on holiday, staying for a month, or living the dream long term, Phuket makes everyday life seamless and stress-free — so you can spend more time enjoying the island instead of worrying about groceries.
