🇨🇦 Vancouver Canada – Taste a FUSION Shopping Scene

As part of our Stores Around the World series, we love taking you to places where shopping reveals something unique and unexpected. This time, we’re heading somewhere truly fusion — in every sense of the word — Vancouver, Canada 🇨🇦

With around 50% of residents born outside Canada, Vancouver is one of the country’s most multicultural cities.

This diversity shapes the shopping scene, where American, Canadian, and Asian stores sit side by side. Inside the aisles, you’ll see shelves packed with goods from all over the world, reflecting the city’s mix of cultures

Let’s discover it !

Supermarkets

Supermarkets come first as they clearly populate the city center

Here, you will find local players, like Loblaws’ Your Independent Grocer and Sobeys’ Safeway (It is fully Canadian-owned here)

You will also come across the International Famous IGA, as well as the excellent discounter No Frills, which is a must-see for visitors

Finally, Vancouver is home to some of the very few Whole Foods Market stores in Canada

Your Independent Grocer

It is part of Loblaws, the #1 grocery group in Canada, and it offers a clear picture of what a Canadian supermarket looks like

The store we visited shows strong segmentation with a clear color code per category, making the layout easy to navigate

On the shelves, you will find a wide mix of international branded products, but also 2 of Loblaws’ main private labels
President’s Choice, known for its innovation and variety
No Name, the group’s iconic yellow-pack value brand

Safeway

Safeway name and logo are familiar for American many readers. The difference is that in Canada, the banner is owned by Sobeys, the country’s #2 grocery group

In Vancouver, Safeway stores stand out for their decoration: they consistently add well-designed thematic elements throughout the store

During our visit in the summer, the seasonal theme was applied clearly and uniformly, and among all the supermarkets we visited

For us, Safeway delivered one of the nicest grocery shopping experiences in the city

IGA

It means Independent Grocer Alliance and it is a large network of independently operated supermarkets found in several countries — such as Australia 🇦🇺

The IGA store we visited was particularly interesting: it is a large two-floor supermarket offering a wide variety of local and international products, along with a big deli and prepared-food section

For travelers who know IGA from their own country, seeing how the banner operates in Canada adds an extra layer of fun to the visit

No Frills

It is LoblawsDiscounter, and each store is not just “a No Frills” — it is someone’s No Frills! This one is Justin’s No Frills – this personalization appears throughout the store

The store uses very bold signage, including the well-known “Won’t Be Beat” claim visible in multiple sections

The strong yellow color code is another defining element, directly linked to Loblaws’ No Name private label, which is heavily present on the shelves

Alongside this value range, No Frills also carries regular national brands, creating a balanced and efficient discount assortment

No Frills is clearly one of the best discounters we have seen for its strong community identity and bold messaging, while PAK’nSAVE in New Zealand stands out for its store decorationclever in-store communication, and overall efficiency

If both formats were combined, they would create what could easily be considered the perfect discount store

Whole Foods Market

At the time of the visit, there were only 14 Whole Foods Market stores in Canada, and some are located in Vancouver

This Canadian Whole Foods experience is consistent with the one in the United States and the United Kingdom, and remains for sure one of the best grocery shopping experiences in the world

What stands out here is the strong support for local Canadian producers,

combined with beautiful store decoration and a refined overall atmosphere

Asian Supermarkets

With nearly half of Vancouver’s population having roots in Asia, the demand for these products is strong

This is why a broad network of stores serving this community has naturally developed across the city

T&T Supermarket

T&T Supermarket was founded in Vancouver! It is the largest Asian grocery chain in Canada, now belonging to Loblaws, and plays a major role in the city’s grocery landscape

T&T offers a wide range of Asian products complemented by key Western brands

The shopping experience is engaging and dynamic. One highlight is the large seafood counter, a format very popular in China, it also brings some sense of authenticity to the store

H Mart

H Mart is another key Asian supermarket in Vancouver

The banner is originally Korean, with a strong presence in the United States, and it offers a broad range of Korean products, complemented by other Asian assortments, and a selection of Western brands for day-to-day shopping

Big-Box Stores

Vancouver also has a good mix of big-box stores, combining the well-established American banners Walmart and Costco with the local Canadian option, Loblaws’ Real Canadian Superstore

These formats are much larger than regular supermarkets and sell far more than groceries, which is why they are usually found outside the city centre. The only exception here is Costco, which is surprisingly close to downtown

Real Canadian Superstore

It is Loblaws superstore format

The grocery section is strong, with a clear mix of local and international brands, alongside Loblaws’ private labels such as President’s Choice and No Name

On top of that, the store covers all the additional categories you expect from a superstore, from household goods to clothing and small appliances – as well as club size packs, in order to compete with Costco

Walmart

Even if Walmart in Vancouver is located a bit outside of the city center, it is still interesting to see how the #1 retailer in the world adapts to each country

Here in Vancouver, this is visible in the large Asian food sections, such as South Asian or Philippine foods, and also in the signage: Asian-related categories are translated into Chinese, while mainstream categories remain only in English

From our visit, we can conclude that promotions are highlighted differently
🇨🇦 Canada: Always Low Prices 🔴
🇺🇸 USA: Everyday Low Prices 🔵

Even though it does not dominate the Canadian market, it remains a strong player, just as it is in the United States, Mexico or China

Costco

It is highly popular Canada – around half of the population holds a membership

In Western Canada, Costco works with a dedicated buying division, and the result is a particularly interesting assortment

The store combines the familiar Costco essentials with a wide range of Asian products and items specific to the region, creating a clear fusion that reflects the multicultural profile of the region

Convenience Stores

Convenience stores are part of everyday life in Canada, just as they are across North America and in many parts of Asia

Circle K

Let’s start with Circle K. Even if the name is found all around the world — Bali, Hong Kong or Vietnam — the brand is actually Canadian

The store follows the familiar Convenience Store layout, with snackshot foodsdrinks, and beverages. What is most interesting to discover here are the local touches and how the local version adapts the concept to its home market

7-Eleven

It is also interesting to see how an international convenience-store banner like 7-Eleven adapts to the Canadian market

What are the local variations:
🥤 the Slurpee flavours
🌭 the hot foods
🍫 the everyday assortment

As well as to observe how a global concept reshapes itself from one country to another — for example, Malaysia vs. Canada

Pharmacies

Stores like Shoppers Drug Mart and London Drugs are not limited to pharmacy or beauty products: they also carry a large selection of grocery items, drinks, snacks, and even small appliances

Shoppers Drug Mart

Shoppers Drug Mart is part of the Loblaws group (yes!, another banner in that group…)

As it is a very large location, it is interesting to discover the local trends in cosmetics and beauty products, as well as the local and international brands they highlight.

On the grocery side, the assortment is also sizeable, and you will find Loblaws’ private labels such as President’s Choice and No Name

London Drugs

London Drugs is an interesting stop because it is a Western Canada regional retailer

Even if “drug” is in the name, the format goes far beyond a classic pharmacy: it works almost like a mini department store, with a wide offer ranging from electronics and home appliances to grocerycosmetics, and everyday items

Best Buy

Canada has no national electronics retail chain so The American Best Buy is the country’s main reference for them

Their stores in Canada are very interactive one. You will find all the usual Best Buy elements, including the Geek Squad, along with strong product presentation zones across the store

While visiting an international location, it is always interesting to see which local brands and local heroes appear in this kind of store — just as it is in countries like Japan

A Note on Packaging

One interesting detail across all stores in Vancouver is the bilingual packaging, mixing English and French on every product. Canada requires both languages to appear with equal visibility, and the execution is generally very well done

Proud to Be Canadian

Across all these stores, one thing clearly stands out: the strong emphasis on Canadian products. Labels such as Made in CanadaProduct of Canada, or Canadian Produce are highlighted everywhere, and retailers display them with real pride

Even international brands like Heinz adapt their packaging to show when an item is produced locally

Conclusion

What makes Vancouver so interesting from a retail point of view is how well the city keeps its fusion spirit alive. The variety is everywhere—between banners, inside the stores, and across the products themselves.

The quality is outstanding, the formats are diverse, and the shopping experience is never boring

The mix of CanadianWestern, and Asian influences creates a retail landscape that is both rich and exciting, supported by a strong local identitybilingual packaging, and a high level of execution

All these elements make Vancouver one of the most interesting markets to discover in the world
