After navigating the cool aisles of Anchorage, the fusion retail of Vancouver, and the lush convenience of Bali, we’re heading to the golden Pacific coast
This time, we’re landing in Mexico’s most vibrant beach destination to explore a retail landscape that is as complete as it is HOT: Puerto Vallarta 🏖️🔥

Puerto Vallarta (or “PV”) is a fascinating case study in retail. It’s where traditional Mexican charm meets high-end international demand. Whether you are a tourist looking for a quick beach snack or a long-term expat stocking a villa, the shopping here is surprisingly sophisticated
The presence of major global players alongside premium local chains means you never have to compromise on your grocery list.
Let’s Discover It
Convenience Stores
In Mexico, it is more than just a shop—it’s a neighborhood landmark. Whether you’re a tourist needing a quick hydration fix or a long-term visitor paying a utility bill, these stores are the pulse of the street
OXXO
If you don’t see an OXXO, you might not actually be in Mexico. It is the undisputed king of convenience, with a store on nearly every corner of Puerto Vallarta
- The “Must-Buy” Snacks: This is the place to grab your Sabritas (local Lay’s) and, of course, a bag of Mafer peanuts. Whether you go for the Japonés or the Sazonados, they are the ultimate Mexican snack
- Cookies & Cakes: Don’t miss the bakery aisle for local legends like Emperador cookies or a Gansito (a snack cake that’s even better if you put it in the freezer first!)
- Drinks & Coffee: OXXO is the best place to grab a cold pack of beers or a 24-hour caffeine fix from their Andatti coffee machines, which are a true Mexican staple

The Superstores
In PV, the most common way to shop is at a Superstore. These are massive “Hypermarket” formats where you can stock your pantry, buy a new beach towel, and grab a rotisserie chicken all in one trip
Chedraui
Chedraui in Puerto Vallarta is widely considered a more elevated shopping experience than its direct local competitors
- The Specialty: They are massive importers, which makes this the ultimate destination for those “hard-to-find” international brands. You’ll often walk through the aisles and find surprising gourmet items that aren’t available anywhere else in the city
- Bakery & Wine: It stands out with a superior wine selection and a bakery section that feels more like a standalone boutique than a grocery corner
▶️ Enjoy the Chedraui Experience

Soriana
The Authentic Mainstay: With 2 major locations in PV (including the bustling Plaza Caracol), it is the true heartbeat of the local retail scene
- The Vibe: It’s a classic, mainstream Mexican experience. While Chedraui leans toward the imported and gourmet, Soriana is the workhorse. It’s the perfect place for a high-volume “routine” shop where you want the most authentic local selection and reliable pricing on Mexican household staples
The “Only in Mexico” Supermarket Challenge
While you’re wandering the aisles, keep an eye out for unique Mexican shopping quirks:
- The Silent Cereal: You won’t see Tony the Tiger or Toucan Sam. Mexican law bans cartoon mascots on sugary boxes to promote health

The Global Icon: Walmart
The location, right across from the cruise terminal, is a world of its own. It’s arguably the busiest store in town, but it’s the most familiar “one-stop shop” for both short-term tourists and long-term residents
- The “Vacation” Essentials: This is the undisputed capital for beach gear (umbrellas, towels, and chairs) and sunscreen
- Souvenir Central: Unlike Walmarts in the US or Canada, the PV location has a huge dedicated section for Mexican souvenirs at much lower prices than the airport or the Malecón
- The Bakery & Deli: The fresh bakery (Panadería) is a must-visit for traditional bolillos and sweet conchas
- The “Familiar” Factor: For many, the pull of Walmart is simply the reliability of the pharmacy and finding those specific home comforts

The Premium Standard: La Comer
If you want to step away from the “superstore”, the gold standard of Mexican retail, La Comer is the place. It is widely considered the most elevated shopping experience in the bay, loved by the expat community and locals alike
- Fresh Produce & Seafood: This is where La Comer truly shines. The fresh produce section is meticulously curated, and the seafood counter is arguably the best in the city—offering a quality that feels like a boutique fish market
- The Gourmet Assortment: Beyond the basics, you’ll find an outstanding selection of meats and a massive variety of high-end international products
- The Vibe: Bright, modern, and famously well-organized, it turns a grocery run into a pleasant part of your day rather than a chore

Wholesale Clubs
Finally, we come to the part of the scene that truly sets Puerto Vallarta apart. While other Mexican beach towns are still catching up, PV has a fully established club scene
Costco
The Costco in Puerto Vallarta is far from your basic big-box warehouse. It is a beautiful, well-maintained store that offers a genuinely elevated shopping experience.
- The “Fresh” Powerhouse: It features an expansive fresh produce section and meat/seafood departments that rival any premium superstore.
- The Staples & Surprises: You’ll find all the Kirkland Signature favorites you know from home, alongside incredible deals on high-end tequila and international spirits.
- City Convenience: Located right in the city, the food court is a popular local stop—not just for a quick hot dog, but for high-quality takeaway pizza that is a go-to for many residents.

Sam’s Club
If you want the bulk deals of a warehouse club without the legendary Costco crowds, Sam’s Club is the perfect alternative
- The One-Stop Shop: It’s located right next to Walmart, making it incredibly convenient to hit both in one go. You get the “Walmart Power” of great deals and Member’s Mark products in a much more comfortable, membership-only environment.
- The Smart Choice: It’s often cheaper to join and less hectic than Costco, offering a “no-nonsense” approach to stocking up on household essentials, bulk snacks, and electronics.

The Last Drop
One of the best things about the grocery scene in Puerto Vallarta is how incredibly accessible it all is. PV’s major retail hubs are clustered together, making your shopping trip efficient and—as promised—spicy.
The scene is vibrant, full of variety, and exciting because you have so much choice so close together. You can easily start your run at Walmart, pop next door to Sam’s Club for bulk deals, and then simply cross the street to Chedraui to find those high-end imported “surprises.” Even the Costco and La Comer duo are close enough to make a multi-stop trip effortless, even on foot.
It’s this “complete” nature that makes living or vacationing here so seamless. You get the authentic, vibrant flavors of Mexico with all the modern retail comforts of a global city
