During our retail discovery across the world, few supermarket chains impressed us as much as Woolworths in Australia and New Zealand
“Woolies” as locals call it, stands out with vibrant stores and impeccable product displays. Their mix of beloved Australian labels and global brands, backed by competitive pricing, is the winning strategy that keeps them at the top of the food chain Down Under.
Let’s discover it 🪄

The Scale of the Giant
Founded in 1924 in Sydney, Woolworths has grown into a massive network of around 1,150 supermarkets and Metro stores across Australia.
What truly stands out to us is the incredible scale of their reach: 20 million weekly visits, roughly 3/4 of the Australian population – one of the highest market penetrations in the world!
They successfully lead against tough global and local players like Coles, Aldi, IGA, and Costco

A Masterclass in In-Store Execution
As we move through the store, the level of execution is truly top-notch. Every department is polished and meticulously maintained, creating an atmosphere that is both attractive and highly professional
- The Fresh Food People: True to their famous slogan, the fruit and vegetable section immediately sets the tone. We were struck by the vibrant displays and the abundance of produce
- Traditional Counters: We love that Woolworths hasn’t abandoned the human touch. Service counters for the deli, seafood, and butcher bring a genuine market-style experience to the customers
- Clean & Efficient Layout: The rest of the store follows a classic but highly optimized layout. Shelves are perfectly stocked and clear, with high-impact promotional end-caps
- Strategic Communication: Signage and messaging are used brilliantly throughout. Reinforcing promotions, their CSR initiatives and their deep-rooted support for local farmers

What You’ll Find on the Shelves
At first glance, Wollies might look like a typical international supermarket. As we looked closer, the reality was different: a huge share of the products are proudly Australian-made
- The Australian Backbone: We were impressed by how seriously it takes its local commitment: 100% Australian meat, eggs, and milk, alongside 96% of the fruit and vegetables
- A Striking Local Depth: Across almost every category, the shelves are packed with Australian brands. For a country of only 27 million people, we found the depth of the local offering truly striking
- Smart Private Labels: We noticed that Woolworths goes far beyond the “basic” private label. Their Macro line, for instance, is a brilliant example of how a grocer can successfully move into health-conscious and premium products
- The Balance of Power: While we found the usual global giants like Heinz, what caught our eye was how local brands dominate them in some categories
- An International Deep-Dive: Despite the local focus, we were surprised by the variety of international cuisines: from British staples to Asia, India, and the Middle East
How Woolworths Interacts with Customers
Modern supermarkets are no longer just places to buy food. They have become part of experiential retail—we can really see how Woolworths understands this, as they’ve come up with some great ways to guide, engage, and reward shoppers.
- Pick Your: We love these Pick Your Boards across the fresh sections; they’re so handy for guiding toward the right choice when shopping.
- The Odd Bunch: This is an amazing initiative that we haven’t really seen elsewhere. It effectively pushes people to buy imperfect fruits and vegetables by offering them at a price at least 20% lower.
- Free fruit for kids: Isn’t this one of the loveliest supermarket initiatives worldwide? Kids can get free fruit like a banana or an apple while the parents do the grocery shopping—this is a smart way to encourage healthy eating
- Everyday Rewards: A well known drill here—collect 1 point per A$1 spent at Woolworths and Big W. Hit 2,000 points, and get A$10 off a future shop or some Qantas Points (Aussie airline company)
- Collectible campaigns: These are a huge trend worldwide, and here is how it works: for every A$30 spent, shoppers get one collectible pack or a bonus packs on partner brands – themes are Disney, Bricks…
How Prices Compare
Each year, the Australian consumer group CHOICE compares grocery prices – Aldi is the cheapest (Index 100) while Woolworths is at 106 and Coles at 107

What is its online situation
It is impressive to see that around 16.2% of sales now happen online. Woolworths is clearly staying ahead of the curve with several grocery options:
- MILKRUN (Metro stores): groceries delivered in about 35 minutes
- Delivery Now: mid-size orders (up to ~50 items) delivered in under 2 hours.
- Scheduled delivery: same-day delivery if ordered before 1:00 PM
- Direct to Boot: order online and collect groceries from the store in about 60 minutes.

What Social Media Say About Woolworths
We noticed that even if it has a good share of voice online, it is strongly challenged by Aldi, which generates a lot of positive engagement thanks to its low-price and viral Special Buys
- Locals say: On Reddit and X, complain about high prices and alleged “fake discounts.” on TikTok and IG, it is more about product discovery and the store experience
- Tourists say: Australian snacks: Tim Tams and Anzac biscuits and chicken-salt chips as well as the “vibe” of a modern Australian supermarket
- Viral products – The $10 Cinnabon Mud Cake, Poni Cosmetics, Additionally, the “Protein-Maxxing” trend continues to cause sporadic shortages of specific high-protein Greek yogurts
