While touring Hong Kong supermarkets, the first thing we noticed was how functional and compact most stores feel. Many are hidden in basements, focused purely on selling groceries rather than creating a pleasant shopping experience.
Then, we came across a WELLCOME Fresh store.
It completely changed our perception of Hong Kong supermarkets: big, bright, colorful, and finally at street level. This concept is clearly changing the HK grocery game.
Let’s discover it 🪄

The HK Punch
The first thing we love in this store is the shopping cart area. Instead of a cold, hidden corner, you are surrounded by a world of Hong Kong-style decoration. It really sets the mood for this amazing store experience.

The Fresh Market Zone
Once we got inside, we were directly plunged into the heart of a “wet market” reimagined. In this zone, they managed to capture the raw energy of traditional Hong Kong markets while stripping away the heat and the grime
What was also really nice is that they used the red-tinted lighting—a classic wet market signature—to make the produce pop, and they also had a lot of super fun and beautiful illustrations on the walls
The “Know Your” Boards
We love those boards, they aren’t just dry instruction manuals; they are beautifully designed, interactive touch points that teach shoppers how to select the best pineapple or ideal banana
Golden Bites
The bakery section, dubbed Golden Bites, is a masterclass in atmosphere
The massive, glowing neon Chinese sign looks exactly like the iconic street lights you’d see in Mong Kok
Behind the counter, they have an open prep area so you can actually see the staff working, and the smell of fresh pineapple buns is everywhere. So yummy

Local Bites
Next is the Local Bites counter. They really tried to recreate the Hong Kong street food vibe here
The walls are beautiful, covered in murals and bursting colors that make the whole area stand out. This counter is all about “grab-and-go” local soul food, packaged specifically for the fast-paced Hong Kong lifestyle

Hanging Cuts
This is probably our favorite part of the store.
You really get that strong wet market vibe here with the real cuts of meat and even a teddy bear hanging on hooks right in front of you
We are in Hong Kong !
Under the Red Sail
Seafood sections in Asian supermarkets are always impressive, and this one is one of the nicest we’ve seen.
The walls are so well decorated with seafood and Hong Kong’s iconic red sails.
Then the product display is really well done—you have the fish on ice, the packed fresh fish, and the live aquarium where you can even catch the one you want to eat!
The Global Pantry
Even if the retailtainment side of the store is great, you can’t forget that they are in a real battle with ParknShop, and that fight is happening right on the shelves
It’s interesting to walk the aisles and see all the different international products they carry, especially the exclusives ones
Browsing through the shelves feels like a treasure hunt
The Premium Glow
The Health and Beauty aisle made us feel like entering a high-end boutique
The integrated shelf lighting—a tactic borrowed from premium department stores
Every product is bathed in a high-definition glow, turning a simple bottle of shampoo into a prestige item
It’s a sophisticated, immersive style that rivals the high-energy merchandising found in Don Don Donki’s famous beauty aisles
The High-Traffic Theater
The event zone in a supermarket is always interesting to check out because that’s where you see which brands are very popular, which ones are being promoted, and the displays they use.
It’s always a fun experience, especially here during Chinese New Year
The Digital Exit
The journey ends at a high-tech checkout hub that refuses to be boring.
Once again, instead of a cold, industrial finish, the self-checkout zone is wrapped in a massive, vibrant mural that blends modern tech with local heritage
The Final Verdict: A Global Shift in Retail
This store is a masterclass in retailtainment, and it’s exactly the kind of initiative we want to share.
Instead of just sticking to a standard price war, they’ve elevated the game by proving that the winner isn’t always the one with the lowest prices, but the one who creates the most memorable environment
By refusing to be “just another grocery store,” Wellcome has successfully used Hong Kong’s cultural identity to create a high-energy destination.
The Retailtainment Movement
This shift isn’t happening in a vacuum; it’s part of a global movement toward immersive shopping. We see this same “art-meets-convenience” formula in the ALDI Corner Stores in Australia, which use local murals to break the discount-brand mold, and the famous themed 7-Elevens in Taiwan that turn a quick stop into a branded experience
