As you walk into a Costco in Japan, everything initially feels familiar: the huge warehouse, bulk packs and oversized shopping carts. Even the department signage is almost entirely in English
The more you make it through the warehouse, you might notice the same pattern we did across 5+ Costco visits in Japan: it is remarkably localized. Japanese brands and locally sourced products take center stage across all departments, complemented by Kirkland Signature and some of the biggest international names in the world

Electronics: The Map Is Unfolded
Your quest for local gold begins the moment you enter.
Electronics are among the first departments you encounter, and the local influence starts immediately. Japanese names such as Hitachi, Sharp and Toshiba are well represented, although one major player—Sony—was surprisingly difficult to find
Regional and global competitors fill the gaps, including LG, TCL and Hisense, which gets a particularly impressive amount of display space
Apple also has a strong presence, while computers, accessories and cameras include ASUS, Acer, HP, MSI, DJI and Insta360.

There is also a large au Mobile counter for smartphones and mobile plans (similar to Costco U.S.A), plus an area to order Costco products online

The Holy Grail: a ¥20 Million Diamond
As you venture deeper, the treasure hunt reaches its absolute peak
The jewelry counter holds the ultimate prize of the entire warehouse: high-end watches, necklaces and fine gem pieces, led by the holy grail of the hunt—a spectacular ring reaching ~¥20 million (US$125,000)
Impressive, although still below Costco China, where a crown jewel reaches ~US$150,000.
Japanese First, Global Powerhouses Second
Following the trail into household goods, the local-first approach becomes particularly clear.
Laundry, cleaning and kitchen-care aisles are dominated by Japanese brands, alongside Kirkland Signature and international leaders such as Finish, Cascade, Scotch-Brite and Scrubbing Bubbles.
Even the presentation feels different, with laundry products displayed in open black plastic cases—a setup we have only seen at Costco in Japan.

The same formula follows us throughout the warehouse: local category leaders alongside global powerhouses. Think Bioré, Kewpie and Heinz, Calbee and Lay’s, or Japanese dairy alongside Danone and Oikos.
Liquid Gold: Japanese Beer, Whisky and Sake
The alcohol aisles reveal a chest of local jewels
Japanese beer leads with Asahi, Kirin, Sapporo, Suntory and Orion, followed by international names including Heineken, Corona, Stella Artois and Budweiser
Japanese whisky is strongly represented alongside Jim Beam and Johnnie Walker, while an extensive sake selectionleaves little doubt about where this voyage has brought us.
At the premium end, Moët & Chandon, Moët Rosé and Veuve Clicquot are among the Champagne choices. What surprised us most was the price tag on this prize: a bottle of Moët & Chandon was just ¥5,919 (~US$40) at the time of our visit.
The Bakery Gets a Japanese Twist
The bakery initially looks like familiar territory, filled with muffins, cookies, donuts, croissants, baguettes, pain au chocolat and celebration cakes. Three baguettes are ¥578 (~US$4), while a pack of muffins is ¥798 (~US$5).
Then hidden local twists reveal themselves.
Some products highlight domestic Japanese wheat, while familiar Costco bakery favorites are joined by unique regional treasures like matcha and white chocolate delicacies.
Rare Cuts: USDA – Aussie – Wagyu
Navigating into the meat department reveals some of the highest-value loot: American USDA Prime adapted for yakiniku and sukiyaki, coveted A4 Wagyu tomahawk, Australian beef and lamb, as good as at Costco Australia
Few aisles bring the world’s great meat traditions together quite like this
Even prepared foods bring another surprise: Costco Japan pizzas are square!
Fresh Catch: The Sushi Counter
Being in Japan, there is one iconic stop every hunter must inspect: sushi.
A 48-piece sushi combination was ¥3,980 (~US$25), while an 18-piece tuna and salmon selection was ¥2,480 (~US$15).
The seafood bounty is equally impressive, stocked with salmon, mackerel, squid, trout, scallops, shrimp, marlin and black cod, including black cod prepared with Saikyo miso.
Fresh Produce: Local Whenever Possible
By the time we reach fresh produce, Costco Japan’s sourcing map becomes clear.
Cabbage, lettuce, lotus root, edamame, mushrooms, tomatoes and many everyday vegetables were Japanese-grown 🇯🇵
Imported treasures appear with tropical fruits and seasonal produce: 🇵🇭 Philippines, 🇹🇭 Thailand, 🇦🇺 Australia, 🇿🇦 South Africa, 🇵🇪 Peru, 🇺🇸 United States, 🇨🇳 China, 🇲🇽 Mexico, 🇬🇹 Guatemala, 🇰🇭 Cambodia and 🇻🇳 Vietnam.
The principle seems straightforward: local whenever practical, global when necessary.
Noodles, Kewpie and a Huge Japanese Pantry
The grocery aisles take the treasure hunt to another level.
The noodle section is enormous, filled with ramen, noodle kits alongside Korean and Chinese choices.
Japanese staples continue with bonito, kombu, seaweed, miso and sauces, while Kewpie mayonnaise sits alongside global names such as Heinz and Barilla.
Snacks follow the same formula: Japanese favorite Calbee alongside global giants Lay’s, Kinder and Nutella, International jewels like crepes, plus occasional rare finds like French Brets chips in Costco-specific packaging.
A Very Asian Costco Detail
Look up and another discovery appears: advertising all around the warehouse walls.
While Costco stores in the U.S. and other markets often promote services such as credit cards or travel, across Asia—including Japan, Taiwan and China—wall space is frequently used to advertise brands and products sold inside the warehouse.
Japan is no exception, adding another distinctly Asian element to the experience.
Even Clothing Has Its Treasures
It might not be the first section you rush to, yet Costco clothing can hide some great finds. Alongside the landmark Kirkland Signature T-shirts, underwear and everyday basics, you can find brands such as Levi’s, with jeans at ¥3,988 (around US$25) during our visit,
Look a little further—and sometimes from warehouse to warehouse—and more local treasures appear, from Japan-branded sweaters to retro-style Tony the Tiger Costco Japan T-shirts.
Beauty
Japan’s influence isn’t limited to food.
Bioré is prominently displayed alongside an extensive selection of facial masks, eye patches and vitamin-C skincare, reflecting the importance of skincare in Japanese retail.
As well all well know international brands with localized packs like Listerine
Japanese Icons Are Everywhere
Another treasure follows you throughout the store: Japan’s most famous characters and franchises.
From Pokémon and Mario to Sanrio characters, they appear across multiple categories and aisles—not just in the toy section. And Mickey & Friends are very much invited to the party, appearing just as prominently throughout the warehouse
Costco Japan Membership: Half the U.S. Price
There is another high-value discovery before we finish: membership is roughly half the price of the equivalent U.S. Costco membership.
- Gold Star: ¥5,280/year (~US$35)
- Business: ¥5,280/year (~US$35)
- Executive: ¥10,560/year (~US$65)
That makes Japan one of the cheapest Costco markets in the world.
One Last Stop: The Costco Japan Food Court
No Costco treasure hunt is complete without claiming your reward at the food court
The famous quarter-pound hot dog with refillable soda is just ¥180 (~US$1.15). Other choices include clam chowder, cantaloupe melon smoothie, latte, chicken sticks and a jumbo bulgogi bake.
Pizza comes in pepperoni and margherita, while one of our ultimate highlights is the Hokkaido soft cream
And one final local jewel before leaving: a salmon poke roll.
Claiming the Prize: What Makes Costco Japan Special?
By the end of the warehouse, the outcome of our hunt becomes clear.
Costco Japan mirrors something we see in supermarkets in Japan: an exceptionally strong focus on local products
A4 Wagyu, Kewpie and Bioré meet Kirkland Signature and global powerhouses such as Heinz and Apple, with surprises around every corner—from special Japanese packaging to a ¥20 million diamond ring.
