WizArno – A Magical Journey Together 🪄

Costco is hugely popular around the world, and in Canada it reaches another level, with around 50% of the population holding a membership.

As you move through the warehouse and explore its different departments, you’ll get a closer look at the Canadian Costco experience and perhaps understand what makes it so successful.

Let’s discover it 🪄

The Global Formula — Connected to Canada

Walk inside and there is no doubt: this is Costco.

The familiar warehouse layout is similar to what we have explored in China, New Zealand, Taiwan and around the world.

Yet as you move through the store, Canada is everywhere. Costco.ca is promoted throughout the warehouse. Canadian products and local sourcing are proudly highlighted, while Made in Canada appears here and there.

The meat department makes it even clearer. Huge Canada AAA Beef signs put Canadian origin front and center, with the message continuing directly onto the packages.

Costco keeps its global formula while making one thing clear: it strongly supports Canadian products and producers.

And that matters. In a grocery market where major Canadian players such as Loblaws, Sobey’s and Metro have a strong presence, embracing local products helps Costco connect with Canadian shoppers

Now, let’s move deeper into the warehouse and discover what makes the Canadian Costco experience special.

Electronics — Strengthening the One-Stop Shop

With Best Buy the major nationwide electronics specialist, Costco makes sure you don’t necessarily need another stop. And during Canada’s cold winter months, that one-stop-shop convenience can be particularly appealing.

The selection is extensive. Apple gets two dedicated tables, alongside Intel, Microsoft and Samsung. TVs feature Hisense, Samsung, Sony and LG, while home appliances include Whirlpool, LG, Electrolux and Hisense.

The slight Canadian touch comes from the telecom section. Like at Costco in Japan and the United States, dedicated booths are part of the experience, while here you can choose between several Canadian operators, including Bell, Rogers, Virgin Plus and Fido.

Canadian Products Take Their Share

As you move deeper into the warehouse, the familiar Costco assortment continues — but Canadian products take a surprisingly large share of the shelves.

From local brands like Molson’s, Celebration & Tim Hortons, to Canadian-grown fresh produce, Costco CA makes the origin easy to spot, regularly highlighting when something comes from Canada.

A Bilingual Shopping Experience

Online in Taiwan, the warehouse signage here in Ontario is mainly in English, but look at the products and French appears everywhere.

Canadian packaging generally carries mandatory information in both English and French: Cinnamon Toast Crunch becomes Croque-Cannelle

Is Costco Canada Actually Cheap?

Costco often sells larger packs, so comparing the price on the shelf doesn’t tell the full story. The better comparison is the price per unit or per 100g.

According to independent Canadian retail basket audits comparing Costco with Walmart Canada (known for its Everyday Low Price strategy) and Loblaws (Canada’s largest grocery retailer), the result is clear: across selected staples, Costco comes out significantly cheaper on a per-unit basis.

And how does Costco Canada compare with Costco around the world? We checked it on a staple, the rotisserie chicken 🍗

  • 🇨🇦 Canada: Rotisserie chicken C$7.99 ≈ US$5.65
  • 🇺🇸 USA: Rotisserie chicken US$4.99
  • 🇦🇺 Australia: Rotisserie chicken A$7.99 ≈ US$5.25
  • 🇯🇵 Japan: Rotisserie chicken ¥899 ≈ US$6.00

#1 Region for the Holiday Season

According to Costco Canada, Canada East (Toronto, Montreal, etc.) is Costco’s #1 region worldwide for the end-of-year season. FYI, Regions are smaller than countries — the U.S., for example, has 8

We visited as Halloween met Christmas, with huge candy packs and giant skeletons alongside Christmas trees, decorations and Disney characters

The Food Court

At the food court, you’ll find the Costco staples: pizza, hot dogs, chicken strips, fries, cookies and ice cream. The famous hot dog and drink combo is C$1.50 (~US$1.06)

Then come the Canadian specialties: poutine for C$6.99 and a Montreal smoked meat sandwich for C$7.99. You can even order extra gravy.

What About Membership?

Here comes another advantage. Costco Canada uses the same face-value membership prices as the U.S but in Canadian dollars

  • Gold Star: C$65 ≈ US$46
  • Business: C$65 ≈ US$46
  • Executive: C$130 ≈ US$92

So, Why Is Costco So Popular in Canada?

Even in Canada’s large grocery market, we believe one-stop shopping plays a crucial role, especially during the colder months.

Costco offers one of the most complete experiences: international staples combined with strong support for Canadian products and producers, competitive prices and relatively affordable membership.

Add the famous Costco treasure hunt, and it becomes easier to understand its extraordinary popularity across the country.
