We love discovering no-frills supermarkets around the world. So when we heard about Gyomu Super, one of Japan’s major supermarket chains, we wanted to experience it for ourselves, especially as its concept is so different from a traditional Japanese supermarket.
And once we stepped inside, it certainly delivered on its promise! An extreme no-frills experience, reminding us of what Aldi and Lidl looked like in Europe back in the 1980s.
Let’s discover it 🪄

A Very Different Japanese Supermarket
As soon as you enter a Gyomu Super, you realize how stripped-down the experience is. Far from the polished traditional Japanese supermarket or the flashy Don Quijote, here it is all about cardboard boxes displaying products, simple shelves and oversized price tags. Hard discount taken to the extreme!
Gyomu Super is one of the few supermarket chains found throughout Japan, from Hokkaido to Okinawa, with a remarkably consistent concept.
We did find one exception in Beppu, where a larger store offered a more spacious shopping experience with a little extra decoration
Fewer Products, All the Essentials
Gyomu Super you will find around 1,700 listed products, a fraction of the tens of thousands you can find in a traditional full-size supermarket.
Yet you can still find practically everything you need for an everyday shop: fresh produce, meat, frozen food, Japanese staples, noodles, snacks and drinks, alongside familiar brands such as Coca-Cola and Cup Noodles.
This makes Gyomu Super particularly convenient when you are traveling in Japan. If you want to quickly pick up some essentials at a very good price without navigating a huge supermarket, it is a pragmatic and efficient place to shop, and well located in some city centers like Sapporo or Kyoto
How Cheap Is Gyomu Super?
Gyomu Super has built its reputation around keeping prices low, and our experience across Japan has consistently been that many everyday products are ~15% cheaper than Aeon—which itself can already offer competitive prices compared with more traditional Japanese supermarkets

Is Gyomu Super Worth Visiting?
Absolutely—especially if you enjoy discovering how people actually shop when travelling.
Gyomu Super is not trying to impress you with beautiful displays or an elevated shopping environment. It offers a relatively narrow selection, keeps the presentation simple and focuses heavily on value.
And that is exactly what makes it interesting.
In a country known for incredibly polished retail experiences, Gyomu Super shows you another side of Japanese grocery shopping.
