During an amazing journey across Japan—from Sapporo in the far north to Okinawa in the subtropical south—we made it a point to visit a local 7-Eleven in every city we stopped in.
It was fascinating to discover how each store had its own atmosphere, with subtle differences in layout, products, and local vibe from one region to another.

SAPPORO | 札幌
The capital of Hokkaido, known for its wide boulevards and winter festivals. It is the starting point of our journey in Japan’s far north
A classic Japanese city 7-Eleven, this store is a great example of what you’ll find in many urban areas across the country
RUSUTSU | 留寿都
One of Hokkaido’s most famous ski resorts, Rusutsu is renowned for its excellent powder snow and year-round outdoor activities.
This classic 7-Eleven is a fun example of how the chain adapts to its surroundings. Located in a ski resort, it’s the perfect place to stock up on hot food, drinks, and everything you need to stay warm. You’ll also find winter accessories and a selection of local Hokkaido souvenirs
TSURUOKA | 鶴岡
A coastal city in Yamagata Prefecture with a deep culinary history. It offers a look at a more traditional side of the Sea of Japan coast
This 7-Eleven stands out thanks to the sunflowers decorating the store, giving it a cheerful atmosphere. At the entrance, you’ll also find a table featuring local products, adding a nice regional touch
YAMAGATA | 山形
A city set in a mountainous basin known for its local agriculture. It provides a quiet, inland atmosphere typical of the Tohoku region
Located in Yamagata, this 7-Eleven is the perfect stop before exploring some of the region’s most famous attractions, like gorgeous Yamadera. One fun surprise? The store even has a small Dragon Ball display, adding a playful touch for anime fans
AIZUWAKAMATSU | 会津若松
A historic town in Fukushima Prefecture famous for its samurai heritage. The city maintains a strong connection to its feudal past
A classic urban 7-Eleven, this store reflects the local culture with a selection of souvenirs featuring the famous Akabeko, the region’s iconic red cow. It’s also a great stop before visiting Ouchi-juku, one of Japan’s best-preserved traditional villages
UTSUNOMIYA | 宇都宮
The capital of Tochigi Prefecture and a major regional hub. It is located just north of the greater Tokyo metropolitan area
Located near the central station, this is a larger-than-average 7-Eleven with a lively atmosphere that perfectly reflects the energy of Utsunomiya. It’s a great store to explore and experience another side of Japan’s convenience store culture
NAGANO | 長野
A city surrounded by mountains that hosted the Winter Olympics. It is centered around one of Japan’s oldest and most significant temples
A lovely urban 7-Eleven in the beautiful former Olympic host city of Nagano. It’s also a great base for exploring some of the region’s top attractions, including the famous Snow Monkeys and the lovely Nagiso
TOKYO | 東京
Japan’s vibrant capital, where tradition meets ultra-modern city life and millions of people rely on convenience stores every day.
This 7-Eleven is a great example of a typical store in the heart of Tokyo. One thing we found particularly interesting is that, unlike in Hong Kong, prices remain remarkably consistent across Japan. Even in Tokyo, one of the world’s most expensive cities, you’ll generally pay the same as in Sapporo, Osaka, or Okinawa.
YOKOHAMA | 横浜
A massive port city located just south of Tokyo. It features a modern waterfront and one of the largest Chinatowns in the world
This urban 7-Eleven is a great example of what you’ll find in Japan’s second-largest city. We visited it at night, offering a different atmosphere from the daytime stores featured elsewhere in this journey
NAGOYA | 名古屋
A major industrial and transport hub in central Japan. It has a unique urban layout and its own distinct local food culture
This urban 7-Eleven has a slightly different layout from the others we visited, making it fun to compare. It also features a nice Daiso shelf, where you can pick up a selection of affordable everyday essentials.
KYOTO | 京都
The former imperial capital of Japan, filled with traditional wooden houses. It remains the cultural center of the country
This 7-Eleven is the perfect stop before sightseeing. Along with everything you need to eat and drink, you’ll also find many useful services for travelers, making it an ideal companion while exploring this iconic city
OSAKA | 大阪
A vibrant commercial city known for its energetic atmosphere and street food. It is the primary heart of the Kansai region
This 7-Eleven offers a slightly different experience, with a dedicated section of anime figurines and collectibles, something we hadn’t seen in the other stores. It also features a large shelf of Japanese souvenirs, making it a fun stop for both anime fans and travelers.
KOBE | 神戸
A beautiful port city, Kobe is famous for its waterfront, cosmopolitan atmosphere, and world-renowned Kobe beef
This is a classic urban 7-Eleven with a pleasant coastal-themed decoration. While there’s nothing particularly unique about the store itself, it’s a great example of what you’ll find in one of Japan’s most iconic cities
HIMEJI | 姫路
Home to Japan’s most famous and best-preserved castle, Himeji is a must-visit destination for history lovers
This classic urban 7-Eleven is the perfect place to grab a meal or snack before visiting the magnificent Himeji Castle, widely considered one of the most beautiful castles in Japan.
OKAYAMA | 岡山
Known for its beautiful castle and one of Japan’s most celebrated landscape gardens, Okayama is a wonderful city to explore
This classic urban 7-Eleven is the perfect place to grab a drink or a meal before visiting Okayama Castle and the magnificent Korakuen Garden, one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan.
HIROSHIMA | 広島
Famous around the world for its moving history, Hiroshima is today a vibrant and welcoming city
Located inside the main railway station, this is one of the largest 7-Elevens we visited during our journey. It’s a great example of the spacious, well-stocked convenience stores you’ll often find in Japan’s busiest transport hubs
BEPPU | 別府
A city on the island of Kyushu famous for its natural hot springs. The steam from the thermal vents is a constant part of the skyline.
This 7-Eleven is the perfect place to grab some delicious food and drinks before or after enjoying the city’s famous hot springs or heading out for a hike in the surrounding mountains
NAGASAKI | 長崎
A hillside port city with a history of international trade. It features a unique mix of Japanese and European influences
We visited this urban 7-Eleven at night, offering a different atmosphere from most of the other stores in this journey. While it’s a classic city store, it’s a great stop before or after exploring this iconic destination
KUMAMOTO | 熊本
Home to the beloved Kumamon mascot, it is located in the center of Kyushu, this city is home to a massive castle. It sits near one of the world’s largest active volcanic calderas
This 7-Eleven is a fun store to explore, with a nice selection of local gifts and souvenirs.
It’s also where we show you one of the most interesting features of Japanese convenience stores: when paying with cash, you simply insert your banknotes into a machine, which automatically counts your payment and returns the correct change—all with no human interaction.
KAGOSHIMA | 鹿児島
Known for its spectacular bay and the impressive Sakurajima volcano, Kagoshima is one of southern Japan’s most beautiful cities
This is another excellent urban 7-Eleven, featuring a lovely selection of local products and souvenirs. It’s a great stop while exploring the beautiful city of Kagoshima
OKINAWA | 沖縄
Japan’s southernmost prefecture, Okinawa is famous for its tropical climate, beautiful beaches, and relaxed island atmosphere.
It’s fascinating to see how this 7-Eleven adapts to local life, with a selection of products designed for the island’s warm climate, including refreshing drinks, cooling items, and sun-care essentials. A great example of how 7-Eleven tailors its stores to each region of Japan.
After visiting all those different 7-Eleven stores across Japan, one thing became very clear: while they all share the same high standards, no two stores are exactly alike.
The core product range, prices, and overall experience remain remarkably consistent from Hokkaido to Okinawa. Yet every store has its own personality, highlighting different local products, souvenirs, seasonal items, or unique features that reflect the region it’s located in
That’s what makes exploring 7-Eleven in Japan so much fun. No matter where you are in the country, there’s always something new to discover.
