🇻🇳 Co.opMart – Vietnam’s Longtime Grocery Leader

Discover one of Vietnam’s most important and long-standing grocery chains: Co.opMart. This true Vietnamese retailer has played a key role in shaping modern grocery shopping across the country. Once the market leader and still regularly switching between first and second place, CoopMart remains a major force in Vietnam’s retail landscape.

The name “Coop” may sound familiar, as it’s shared with well-known supermarket brands in other countries, Sweden, Switzerland, Japan, … — this one is firmly local

The stores are not oversized, and they offer more than a standard supermarket—groceries, electronics, home goods, and even clothing—making it a superstore in spirit

Let’s Dicover it!

Nice Neighborhood Superstore

Co.opmart is a cleanwell-organized superstore. It’s not flashy or fancy, but it does the job. You’ll find grocerieshousehold goods, a bit of clothing, and some electronics — all under one roof

The layout is simple, the selection is good, and shopping here is usually easy and efficient. On Top, the store signage is bilingual

World-Class Fixtures

One thing that really stands out at Co.opmart — and in many Vietnamese supermarkets — is the quality of the fixtures

Some end caps are beautifully decorated and even illuminated, looking more like displays in a department store than a grocery aisle

You’ll also find clever touches like a lighted in-shelf display for cooking oils, styled like a mini showroom with LED lightsdecor elements, and strong brand visuals — all built right into the regular shelf

Inside the shelves, they often create pop-up sections — small, lit-up displays that push forward to highlight a key product

Next-Level Cross-Selling

Co.opmart takes cross-selling seriously! You’ll spot it on top of freezers, and also at the entrance of the aisles themselves.

What’s unique is how they use illuminated displays right there to showcase related products

For example, at the start of the cookies aisle, you might see a beautifully lit display filled with La Vache Qui Rit cheese — inviting you to pair the two

Let’s Explore the Store

After highlighting the store’s amazing features, it’s time to walk through the different sections

Fresh Produce

The fresh produce section is placed right at the entrance, as usual

It’s a simple and nicely decorated area, with some elements hanging from the ceiling and a mix of wooden fixtures

Another nice touch: the promotions are displayed in lovely baskets, placed on decorated stands that help create a warm and inviting atmosphere around the deals

Cool Fruit Section

The fruit section is clean and nicely presented, with a mix of regular and some exotic fruits. The variety isn’t very large, but the selection covers the basics.

What stands out is that apples are stored in a fridge, which is quite unique

Lots of Green

The vegetable section at CoopMart is split between chilled and ambient displays too, with produce laid out either in open crates or neatly stacked in fridges.

You’ll find all the basic staple items any household needs. What makes it more interesting is the addition of local Vietnamese varieties, such as rau muống (water spinach)

As a quick guide, 50,000 VND is about €1.80 or $2.00, so you can mentally divide prices by 25,000 to get a value for ~1 euro or dollars

At Co.opmart, prices for fresh produce are shown per kilo, which is standard in Vietnam. In comparison, prices in the U.S. are usually shown per pound (lbs), and in China, often per 100 grams

Meat & Seafood with Character

The meat and seafood counters at CoopMart focus on the essentials, with a good selection of pork, beef, and a few seafood items

What adds character is the playful decoration—cows, pigs, and seafood visuals give the area a friendly touch.

Compared to other Vietnamese supermarkets like GO! for example, the offer is more limited

Deli Sausages

Right next to the meat counter, a large fridge is partly dedicated to deli products, with a strong focus on sausages

There’s a surprisingly wide selection—different types, sizes, and flavors, both local and imported

The rest of the fridge continues into the dairy section, which you’ll see just after

Dairy Qui Rit

The dairy section is quite straightforward, arranged in a basic open fridge without elaborate displays

There’s a good mix of local and international brands, though the local players are clearly leading. One of the most visible is TH true MILK, a Vietnamese brand that shows up across multiple dairy categories,

On the international side, the selection is more limited but includes a few familiar names like Emborg and Monte. One brand that stands out is La Vache qui rit—its products take up a significant amount of space,

Packed Goods

Local Delights

There is a strong range of locally influenced products. You’ll find a huge choice of instant noodles, reflecting the Vietnamese love for quick and tasty meals.

Coffee lovers will notice Café Việt, a popular local style so important that even Nestlé’s Nescafé line includes a dedicated range for it.

The store also stocks a variety of nuts, candies, soy sauces, and some milk products—all staples in Vietnamese kitchens.

The selection is extensive and impressive, showing CoopMart’s focus on everyday local tastes

Global Powerhouses and Regional Gems

CoopMart carries all the well-known international brands like Coca-ColaFerrero, Heinz, Pringles

What’s interesting is alongside global powerhouses there are some regional favorites: Mr. Potato from Malaysia, Pocky from Japan, and even Thai dried squid snacks like Bento

Washing Products – Strong Local Focus

In the washing products aisle, CoopMart clearly prioritizes local brands. While a few international names are available, the main focus is on Vietnamese products, which dominate the selection

Upscale Beauty Care

The beauty care section at CoopMart is impressively upscale for a supermarket. It features all the main international brands and is designed with premium touches—special flooring, bright spotlights, and illuminated end caps that draw your attention. The displays include illuminated shelf stoppers, adding to the luxurious feel.

While this level of presentation is fairly common in Asia, it’s rare to see such a polished and high-end setup in Western grocery stores, making it stand out in the local retail scene

Limited Liquor

The liquor section is small and straightforward, reflecting Vietnam’s preference for beer over spirits. While it carries all the main brands, much of it is kept behind a security window, with the rest openly displayed

Islands of Deals

Deals and promotions are prominently featured on islands placed in the middle of aisles. This setup, typical of larger supermarkets or superstores, helps shoppers easily spot current offers

Home of the Rice Cooker

Quite a nice dedicated section to home products, offering a solid range of everyday essentials like cleaning tools and accessories. There are plenty of deals throughout this area, making it easy to find value.

What truly stands out is the extensive selection of rice cookers—remarkably large given the store’s size. This variety highlights just how important rice cooking is in Vietnamese households

Basic Clothing

CoopMart also includes a nice section selling clothing essentials, with some focus on beachwear, in this location as we are in a beach town

While not extensive, the selection is solid and reflects the store’s superstore strategy—offering a bit of everything to meet a wide range of everyday needs under one roof.

The Biggest Celebration of the Year

Chinese New Year is the retail event of the year—far more important than Christmas or Easter, which are barely observed in Vietnam.

The store goes all out with decorations, creating a festive atmosphere that captures the spirit of this major holiday. From entrance to aisles, everything is designed to celebrate and support the season, making it clear just how central Chinese New Year is to Vietnamese retail and culture

A Strong Local Player in Vietnam’s Growing Market

CoopMart offers a clear example of what modern grocery shopping in Vietnam looks like today. The store features a wide range of products, balancing everyday essentials with international brands and strong local offerings

They perform well across the board—from fresh produce and packaged goods to home products and clothing—showing a well-rounded, superstore approach. This mix reflects the evolving retail landscape in Vietnam, where shoppers expect more variety and convenience under one roof

CoopMart’s presence as one of the country’s top supermarket chains makes it a great window into the future of Vietnamese grocery retail.
