Having visited more than 20 different 7-Eleven stores from the north to the south across the country, we can tell you one thing for sure: they are HUGE!
These 24/7 stores are much bigger than the 7-Elevens you find in the United States, China, or Singapore. Only the locations in Taiwan and Thailand even come close in terms of scale
In fact, they feel much more like mini-supermarkets than standard convenience stores
The Products
The product range is also amazing, and it covers so many different categories.
As soon as you enter the store, you’ll find a great selection of everyday essentials. While it may not be as extensive as in Thailand, it still covers everything you might need during your trip, from health and beauty products to basic clothing, household essentials, and even a Daiso section
Moving further into the store, you’ll discover an impressive cold drinks section. Whether you’re looking for soft drinks, Japanese teas, coffee, juices, energy drinks, or beers, the choice is remarkable—mixing unique Japanese flavors with iconic international brands
As in Malaysia, the snack section is just as impressive. Sweet or salty, ice creams, instant noodles – local or international -, you’ll find an absolutely amazing choice!
And then you also have the 7-Select range (like in China), which is truly amazing and full of fantastic discoveries
But the real difference, vs. other 7-Elevens around the world, comes when you reach the refrigerated section. 7-Eleven Japan offers an incredible range of fresh food:
- Quick bites: Onigiri and sandwiches (try the egg one).
- On-the-go meals: Bento meals, salads, and newly protein dishes.
The selection is so extensive that you could easily eat exclusively from 7-Eleven for several days without getting bored
And if that’s still not enough, there’s also a hot food counter with popular items such as fried chicken, sausages, croquettes, steamed buns, and other freshly prepared snacks
Finish your visit with a freshly brewed coffee or one of the increasingly popular self-service smoothies
And to offer a complete convenience store experience, they have an aisle full of grocery essentials

The Services
The services are a massive reason why 7-Eleven Japan is so popular. It’s practically a neighborhood survival hub:
- 🏪 7-Bank ATMs: The ultimate lifesaver for international travelers—they accept foreign cards with low fees.
- 🎟️ Daily Errands: You can pay bills, ship or collect parcels, print documents, and buy event tickets.
- 🍱 Hot Food: In-store microwaves mean staff will heat up your meals on the spot.
- 🚻 Public Restrooms: Most stores offer free, clean, and well-maintained restrooms (a rare find while exploring).
- 💳 IC Card Top-Up: You can seamlessly tap to pay and reload your Suica or PASMO cards.
The Prices
One thing that surprised us was the pricing. Overall, 7-Eleven Japan is very affordable, especially for its own products. However, international products are a bit more expensive than in supermarkets:
Our reco: pay the small premium for the fresh products and unique meals you can find there. For international brands, it is better to go to a nearby supermarket, usually very close and with a better price
The Scenery
Some stores have become attractions in their own right thanks to their incredible surroundings
You may have already seen them on social media: the famous 7-Eleven with Tokyo Tower rising right behind it, or the iconic store with Mount Fuji creating one of the most photographed views in Japan
Conclusion
Even if they may not be as fun as the themed 7-Eleven stores in Taiwan, 7-Eleven Japan still offers what is probably the best convenience store experience in the world.
The combination of huge stores, an incredible product range, delicious fresh food, and excellent services makes them an essential stop during any trip to Japan.
And if you’ve ever wanted to try living exclusively on convenience store food for a few days, there’s probably no better place in the world to do it.
