Supermarkets dominate Vancouver’s city center, offering a mix of local staples and global brands. You’ll find Canadian-owned favorites like Your Independent Grocer (Loblaws) and Safeway (Sobeys), alongside the internationally famous IGA.
For value, the discounter No Frills is a local must-see, while Whole Foods Market provides a premium experience at one of its few Canadian locations.

As part of Loblaws, Canada’s leading grocery group, this store provides a classic look at the national supermarket experience. The layout uses strong color-coded segmentation for easy navigation.

Safeway name and logo are familiar for American many readers. The difference is that in Canada, the banner is owned by Sobeys, the country’s #2 grocery group
In Vancouver, Safeway stores stand out for their decoration: they consistently add well-designed thematic elements throughout the store
During our visit in the summer, the seasonal theme was applied clearly and uniformly, and among all the supermarkets we visited
For us, Safeway delivered one of the nicest grocery shopping experiences in the city

IGA
It means Independent Grocer Alliance and it is a large network of independently operated supermarkets found in several countries — such as Australia 🇦🇺
The IGA store we visited was particularly interesting: it is a large two-floor supermarket offering a wide variety of local and international products, along with a big deli and prepared-food section
For travelers who know IGA from their own country, seeing how the banner operates in Canada adds an extra layer of fun to the visit

No Frills
It is Loblaws‘ Discounter, and each store is not just “a No Frills” — it is someone’s No Frills! This one is Justin’s No Frills – this personalization appears throughout the store
The store uses very bold signage, including the well-known “Won’t Be Beat” claim visible in multiple sections
The strong yellow color code is another defining element, directly linked to Loblaws’ No Name private label, which is heavily present on the shelves
Alongside this value range, No Frills also carries regular national brands, creating a balanced and efficient discount assortment
No Frills is clearly one of the best discounters we have seen for its strong community identity and bold messaging, while PAK’nSAVE in New Zealand stands out for its store decoration, clever in-store communication, and overall efficiency
If both formats were combined, they would create what could easily be considered the perfect discount store

Whole Foods Market
At the time of the visit, there were only 14 Whole Foods Market stores in Canada, and some are located in Vancouver
This Canadian Whole Foods experience is consistent with the one in the United States and the United Kingdom, and remains for sure one of the best grocery shopping experiences in the world
What stands out here is the strong support for local Canadian producers,
combined with beautiful store decoration and a refined overall atmosphere

Asian Supermarkets
With nearly half of Vancouver’s population having roots in Asia, the demand for these products is strong
This is why a broad network of stores serving this community has naturally developed across the city
T&T Supermarket
T&T Supermarket was founded in Vancouver! It is the largest Asian grocery chain in Canada, now belonging to Loblaws, and plays a major role in the city’s grocery landscape
T&T offers a wide range of Asian products complemented by key Western brands
The shopping experience is engaging and dynamic. One highlight is the large seafood counter, a format very popular in China, it also brings some sense of authenticity to the store

H Mart is another key Asian supermarket in Vancouver
The banner is originally Korean, with a strong presence in the United States, and it offers a broad range of Korean products, complemented by other Asian assortments, and a selection of Western brands for day-to-day shopping

Big-Box Stores
Vancouver also features a diverse big-box landscape, blending American giants Walmart and Costco with the local Real Canadian Superstore (Loblaws)
These massive formats offer much more than groceries and typically sit outside the city center—with the notable exception of Costco, which remains surprisingly close to downtown

The store also covers standard superstore categories—from household goods to clothing and appliances—plus club-sized packs to compete directly with Costco
Walmart
Despite its location outside the city center, Vancouver’s Walmart demonstrates how the world’s #1 retailer adapts locally.
This is most evident in the expansive South Asian and Philippine food sections. The adaptation extends to the signage, where Asian-related categories are translated into Chinese, while mainstream aisles remain in English.
From our visit, we can conclude that promotions are highlighted differently

It is highly popular Canada – around half of the population holds a membership
The store combines the familiar Costco essentials with a wide range of Asian products and items specific to the region, creating a clear fusion that reflects the multicultural profile of the region

Convenience stores are part of everyday life in Canada, just as they are across North America and in many parts of Asia
Circle K
Let’s start with Circle K. Even if the name is found all around the world — Bali, Hong Kong or Vietnam — the brand is actually Canadian
The store follows the familiar Convenience Store layout, with snacks, hot foods, drinks, and beverages. What is most interesting to discover here are the local touches and how the local version adapts the concept to its home market

Stores like Shoppers Drug Mart and London Drugs are not limited to pharmacy or beauty products: they also carry a large selection of grocery items, drinks, snacks, and even small appliances

Shoppers Drug Mart is part of the Loblaws group (yes!, another banner in that group…)
As it is a very large location, it is interesting to discover the local trends in cosmetics and beauty products, as well as the local and international brands they highlight.
On the grocery side, the assortment is also sizeable, and you will find Loblaws’ private labels such as President’s Choice and No Name

A Note on Packaging
One interesting detail across all stores in Vancouver is the bilingual packaging, mixing English and French on every product. Canada requires both languages to appear with equal visibility, and the execution is generally very well done
Proud to Be Canadian
Across all these stores, one thing clearly stands out: the strong emphasis on Canadian products. Labels such as Made in Canada, Product of Canada, or Canadian Produce are highlighted everywhere, and retailers display them with real pride
Even international brands like Heinz adapt their packaging to show when an item is produced locally
Conclusion
Vancouver’s retail landscape is defined by its vibrant fusion spirit. This variety is evident across banners, store formats, and the products themselves.
The quality is exceptional, offering a diverse shopping experience that remains consistently engaging. By blending Canadian, Western, and Asian influences, the city has created a rich market supported by a strong local identity and high-level execution.
